Foot Sesamoid X-Ray
Objective
Assessment of the tibial and fibular sesamoids of the 1st metatarsal. Indicated in sesamoiditis, sesamoid fracture, osteochondrosis (Renander disease), hallux valgus with sesamoid pathology, chronic plantar pain at the great toe.
Quality criteria
Both sesamoids (tibial and fibular) visualised separately.
Space between sesamoids and head of 1st metatarsal visible.
Sharp bony outline of the sesamoids.
Common errors
Insufficient dorsiflexion — sesamoids obscured by the metatarsal.
Beam not tangential — sesamoid superimposition.
Field not centred over the metatarsal head.
