Odontoid process (dens of the axis)
AnatomySuperior bony projection of the body of the axis (C2) that articulates with the atlas (C1) via a transverse ligament. Visualised in the open-mouth projection. A fracture of it, or rupture of the transverse ligament, causes potentially cord-threatening atlantoaxial instability.
